Bootham Wins Independent School Award
We are delighted to announce that Bootham School won the Independent Schools Award 2024 for Environmental Campaigns.
The award was given in recognition of the wonderful sustainable work of students and staff. It also strengthens Bootham’s reputation as a leader in forward-thinking education.
Bootham has stood as a beacon of sustainability for more than 200 years. Guided by its Quaker ethos, the school is steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship. Its whole community is deeply committed to reducing their environmental footprint and fostering a culture of sustainability.
At Bootham, sustainability isn’t just a concept – it’s a call to action. Bootham students are actively engaged in initiatives that address pressing environmental issues and promote sustainable practices both locally and globally. Students Anahit Davtyan
and Nika Protkra recently had the opportunity to address Members of Parliament at the Houses of Parliament. They spoke passionately about the global consequences of fast fashion.
BEAST
BEAST (Bootham’s environment and sustainability team) works tirelessly to implement eco-friendly practices throughout the school. They are focused on reducing energy consumption to promoting recycling and waste reduction. Initiatives such as the Recycling Hub and the Bikes In Need programme (refurbishing unwanted bikes to be used by the refugee community in York) exemplify their commitment to sustainability in action. These initiatives empower students to take concrete steps towards creating a more sustainable future.
York Environment Week
Central to Bootham’s sustainability efforts is education and awareness-building. Through initiatives like York Environment Week and Recycling Week, they educate the community about the importance of environmental conservation and empower individuals to take meaningful action.
Allerton Waste Recovery Park
Visits to facilities like the Allerton Waste Recovery Park provide students with first-hand knowledge of waste management and recycling processes. This inspires them to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives. By equipping its students with the knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges, Bootham empowers them to become leaders in sustainability and advocates for positive change.
Bootham School’s commitment to sustainability is not merely a reflection of its values. It is a testament to its dedication to living out their Quaker principles in all aspects of life. From empowering student advocates to fostering a culture of sustainability
and promoting environmental education, Bootham’s school community is united in its efforts to lead the charge towards a greener, more sustainable world. As they continue to innovate and inspire, they remain steadfast in their commitment to sustainability and stewardship. They know that together, we have the power to make a difference that truly matters.
Congratulations everyone.
